Truck slams liquor store in theft

Updated 7 months ago
BENJAMIN RICETTO Today staff The Liquor Depot on Franklin Avenue is closed this morning after a truck smashed into it during an apparent break-in last night, according to police.

There's one less place in Fort McMurray to buy booze today.

Last night, a man drove a pickup truck into the downtown Liquor Depot at 9531A Franklin Avenue. As of this morning, the store is closed as the window and brickwork that makes up the store's front has been severely damaged.

Const. Karolina Malik of the Fort McMurray RCMP said the incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. last night.

"We received a report just last night that a pickup truck had driven into the Liquor Depot. So the windows and brick work (and) whatnot have been all smashed," Malik said.

Police don't believe anyone was hurt in the incident, but an undisclosed quantity of liquor was stolen.

Richard Allan McLeod, 39, of Fort McMurray was arrested and charged in connection to the incident shortly after it happened.

After checking the store's surveillance video, police had a description of the suspect, who was later found walking along Manning Avenue by regular police patrols. He was arrested without incident.

McLeod is facing three charges including breaking and entering, mischief over $5,000 and theft under $5,000. He was brought before a justice of the peace last night and was in police custody awaiting a court appearance this morning.

A manager at the downtown liquor store was present at the location, but was unable to answer questions about the incident. Calls to the Liquor Depot head office in Edmonton went unreturned at time of writing.
