Slime, skating, swimming and shows are all part of this Family Day long weekend.
Staying true to the holiday, a variety of family friendly events will be open to local residents.
The Oil Sands Discovery Centre will be offering free admission to its Mad Scientist-themed Family Day.
?We have a (performer) who will be conducting different experiments, designed for kids and people of all ages. There will be some comic relief in addition to the chemical reactions, where things will change colour and possibly explode,? said Deanna Mercer, visitor services interpreter at the centre.
She said in addition to the Calgary performer?s show, there will also be family-based science experiments including slime-making in the activity room, snow experiments and film-canister rockets.
Mercer said Family Day is one of the centre?s busiest days of the year. On Monday officials expect at least 200 people to come through their doors. In previous years, they?ve seen more than 600 visitors on Family Day.
The event runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. while the Mad Scientist shows are at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
MacDonald Island will be hosting two events during the weekend.
MacIsland marketing co-ordinator Amanda Purcell is encouraging the community to put on its jigging shoes for MacIsland?s Newfie Night on Saturday.
Celtic group The Atlantic Waves will be providing the musical backdrop for an evening of dance. Tickets are $10. While food isn?t included in the price, refreshments are available.
Cocktails start at 7:30 p.m. The dance and show begin at 9 p.m.
For a more family-friendly event, the island is also hosting a Family Day festival on Monday.
?It?ll be like a mini-craze,? Purcell said, comparing the event to the annual New Year?s function. ?All three ice surfaces will be open for free skating, there will be face painting, henna tattoos, games and crafts.
?There will be some kind of event going on inside all day, which, considering the weather, is probably a good thing.?
Rod Boss, a Vancouver-based magician, will also be on hand to entertain McMurrayites.
Purcell said while the event is free, those wishing to attend one of Boss?s three shows are encouraged to sign up.
The ticket booth is open at 10 a.m. Doors to the event open from noon until 5 p.m. with Boss?s shows starting at 1 p.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4:15 p.m.
A free skate will also be hosted by the Kinette Club of Fort McMurray, on Monday.
The event will take place at Borealis Park from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
For those choosing to stay inside, Centennial Pool will host a family swim on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is $1 or a food bank donation.
Weather conditions in the region this weekend are expected to improve.
On Saturday there will be a high of -10 C with a low of ?24 C. On Sunday the high will reach ?12 C with a low of ?15 C and the holiday Monday will warm up to ?7 C with a low of ?18 C, according to Accuweather.
There may be some snow late Monday.
